Well, you finally made it to the end of the school year—congrats! With finals wrapping up or already out of the way, the summer is all yours to hang out, go to a college program, or just have fun. The only thing you shouldn't do? Doomscroll. After 36 (or more) weeks of tirelessly working, your brain needs to lean into calmer activities bit by bit, and doomscrolling will only make you feel unfulfilled and unhappy. So, we compiled a list of some things to try out that can get you into the summer mood without rotting away for hours.
Getting organized
(Our favorite thing)
Journal your day - reflect on a few good moments from the day and write about any worries you may be having
Make a check list - separate things that are in your control and things that aren't. Then, write down a few small actions you can do to take control of things that feel out of reach.
Make your bed - even if you do nothing else all day, at least you made your bed
Getting crafty
Go make something
Coloring & diamond art - great ways to decompress while still being productive
Crochet, knit, sew, or embroider - portable and relaxing
DIY kits & pottery - if you're looking for a larger activity, sit down and try out a more sizable craft
Getting outside
Some higher effort activities
Meditate, stretch, or do yoga or pilates - reconnect with your body in a low-intensity way
Garden - find some fruits, vegetables, or flowers to grow in your own backyard
Play catch - throw a ball around with some friends, or get a football game going
Getting involved
Make a difference in the community
Volunteer - find a local shelter or charity to work at
Letters & post cards - write to people in the community who you want to thank
Beach cleanup - more people at the beach means more trash, so you (and a few friends) can make a difference and help pick it up
These are just a few ways you can get ready for the summer in a slower setting without being on your phone. Remember to take some time to relax over the next few months and do things for yourself, not just your college applications. We'll also be taking a summer break so that we're recharged and ready for the 2026-2027 school year, and we'll be back with new Blog posts and resources in August. In the meantime, if you liked this, check out or other posts below or in the Blog page. And, from us at Planning Goose, have a great summer!
