Improving Your Studying With Music

We can already tell that you’re probably thinking one of two things: either “why would I listen to music while studying…that’s so distracting,” or, “I already listen to music and I don’t need to change that.” And we get it, you like to study your way. But, we also have some tips that can help benefit your studying just from what you listen to for each subject. So, let’s get started.

  1. English

If you’re studying for English or even just doing some homework, you’re going to want calm music to listen to. We suggest slow songs or genres like folk and classical to help you get in the zone, because these will keep you focused on the task at hand and prevent distractions. Plus, the music will serve as a background sound rather than what’s constantly going through your head, meaning you’ll find much more success in working efficiently.

  1. Math & Science

Contrary to English, this is when it’s time to get energized. If you’re doing a repetitive action like practice problems, loud and excited music will keep you focused. Your brain will match the music, and in some cases, the speed of the songs will help you finish your studying or assignment even faster.

  1. Social Studies

To study for history, lyricless music is best, or you could choose no music at all. This is when you’ll need to remember important dates or specific information, so the fewer distractions you have, the better. Bonus points if you can find music from the time period you’re studying—we’re not sure if it’ll help you remember information, but the vibes will be there!

Really, the music you listen to boils down to one concept. If you’re doing something repetitive, intense, or relatively easy, upbeat is the way to go. But if you’re doing something calm, difficult, or rigorous, it’s best to stick to quieter songs. And, if all else fails, there’s always Lofi Studying Girl, who’s always live.
