How To Organize Your Google Drive

Chances are, your Google Drive is a hot mess with files everywhere and not a folder in sight. This
isn’t a unique problem, but it’s one that’s easy to solve with just a few buttons. So, on this second installment of our “how to organize…” series, we’re going to be diving into Google Drive.
Folders!
The first step in cleaning your Drive is giving them a place to go, and that’s where folders come in. We choose to make them based on classes/periods in the day (as a school example) and on blog, tools, or other for Planning Goose. But, you can choose what works best for you. Inside of each of these class folders, we also make sub-folders for units or chapters. Then, it’s time to sort. And, this doesn’t need to involve dragging every individual file (of which there are probably many) into one folder at a time. Just hold down on a file so that a select tool appears. Then, select all of the files you want to send to a certain place, click “Move,” and pick the folder you want.

Color coding
But, the folders don’t just stop there. Once you’ve made them, it’s time to add color! For this, there is no rhyme or reason, and is mostly for aesthetic purposes. But, that doesn’t take away its value. If you associate certain classes with certain colors, then make that a reality based on what you want! (But, we all know that science is green). Or, you can have similar colors or shades be for related things—it’s all up to you.
Don’t be afraid of the trash
Like with Gmail, you don’t need to keep everything. If you’re sorting through files and find random things from years past without a place to go, the trash is an acceptable home. Remember, you’re doing this for the sake of organization, so making countless folders with only a few things in them isn’t really going to help.

And now, it’s up to you. Take some time (maybe a long road trip or a study hall period) to clean out and clean up your Google Drive so that it can be spotless. And, if you liked this, be sure to check out our other posts below or in the Blog page. But for now, we’re on Thanksgiving break, and you should be too! We’ll be back next week with a new digital file and blog post.
