How To Write The Best Applications

It’s the time of year where applications start piling up extremely quickly. Whether they be for different National Honor Societies, club leadership positions, or summer programs, there’s no way to avoid writing them. And, of course, you want the best results possible, so we have a few tips and tricks to achieve your goals.

  1. Get set up

Start your application process by looking at what’s being asked of you. If you’ve written a few applications before, you’ve probably noticed that the questions are relatively similar to one another. Because that’s the case, we’ve created a chart to help you organize frequent application answers so that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time. Create a blank document with the application questions and that response bank. Then, you’re set up.

  1. Plan out your responses

Once your application’s questions are in a separate document, read and analyze each one. Make sure you fully understand what’s being asked of you and what you should write about. Then, start coming up with ideas for your answers. For each question, create a list of 3-5 things you want to talk about. This can be a comprehensive response outline or just a few words, but what’s important is that you don’t just sit down and write instantly.

  1. Check your plan

After you’ve developed an idea of what your answers will be, take a few minutes away from your screen. Then, come back and reread your outlined responses. Do they still make sense? Can you write a lot about them? Make sure everything works for the application before you waste your time, and then it’ll be time to write.

  1. Get writing

Now that you’ve confirmed that you like your outlined responses, fill in the gaps. Write the rest of the application around your outline/plan, and make sure to use details instead of fluff. Regardless of what the application is for, the quality of your work and responses is much more important than the quantity.

  1. Wait & proofread

Now that the application is written, take a break for a few hours. Whether you get to work on another assignment or just go relax, spend some time away from the application. Then, come back later and reread everything. Ensure that you like and feel confident with all of your completed responses, and once you do, copy and paste them back over into the application. Do one more check to make sure you approve of everything, and hit submit!

No matter how quickly you want to get your application done or how short it may be, you can’t write it all in one sitting. Following these steps allows you to craft the best possible application, regardless of the purpose. And, if you liked this, check out our other posts below or in the Blog page.
