Why Routines Don’t Always Help

It’s easy to want to follow a routine all the time to make life easier. Doing the same thing constantly can feel safe and easy, and allow you to have a set of processes that speed up your life. Yet, routines aren’t always the solution to a list of things to do, and repetitive actions can hurt you in the long run. Keep reading to learn why ⬇️
Becoming complacent
Following the same schedule all the time can push you into a boredom trap. Instead of successfully working hard in set periods of time, you do mediocre work all the time. A schedule can take over your life and hurt the quality of the work you do, also making you less efficient. A fresh plan only works for so long, and once you’ve been following the same schedule for a while, you start to slow down and burn out.
Distraction and stress
A set-in-stone schedule can negate productivity on the work you’re actively doing. Frequent reminders about the things you need to get done and how you can only spend X amount of time on a task can only stress you out more and take away from what you are trying to complete right now. Worrying about the future and what’s next on the schedule makes you miss simple things, and that only ends up hurting you.
Rigid perfectionism
Completing the same routine every day or week can put yourself into a groove or a hole. This doesn’t happen for everyone, but if you get too used to something, you resist change. Having to do an activity at a set time or wait until a specific point to switch subjects harms the amount of work you’re able to get done and takes away from your ability to be spontaneous.
How to fix this
No, not all routines are bad. But, the same one over and over can prevent you from reaching your goals. So, don’t do the same thing all the time! Embrace change and not following patterns 24/7. Go with the flow and make adjustments to what you need. Be your own guide, not some schedule or plan that you created months ago.
Routines give us structure and sensibility. But, that’s only true when you’re knowledgable about your routine and how it’s affecting you. Don’t get caught up in the details of a schedule and aim to help you. And, if you liked this, check out our other posts below or in the Blog page.
